What is SCSKiller?

SCSKiller is a free and open-source Windows utility that targets shader compilation stutter in PC games. It scans a game's shaders and pipelines and compiles them into the GPU driver's cache before gameplay begins.

It supports NVIDIA and AMD GPUs for DirectX 12 games, with DirectX 11 support available on NVIDIA. It can also use an optional recorder for games whose required pipelines cannot be fully determined from their files.

SCSKiller How It Works

SCSKiller targets shader compilation stutter by preparing shader pipelines before a game needs them during gameplay. Its main workflow is Scan, Plan, and Compile, with the resulting pipelines placed in the GPU driver's shader cache.

1Scan installed games and identify the shaders and pipelines SCSKiller can prepare, including pipeline counts, shader counts, cache size, compile time, and current compilation status.
2Build a compilation plan for the selected game. When the optional recorder is used, SCSKiller can use recorded pipeline activity and frame-time information to identify additional pipelines.
3Compile the prepared pipelines into the GPU driver's shader cache before launching the game. NVIDIA cache folders include DXCache and GLCache. AMD uses the driver DxCache folder.
4Launch the game normally or through SCSKiller's Play button; the game can then use the already-populated driver shader cache.

SCSKiller Installation Guide

SCSKiller provides both an installer and a portable Windows build. The official project documentation also explains the current code-signing limitation and how users can verify downloaded files.

1Download SCSKiller-Setup.exe from the official GitHub Releases page, or download the SCSKiller portable ZIP package.
2For the installer version, run SCSKiller-Setup.exe. It installs for the current Windows user and does not require administrator rights.
3For the portable version, extract the ZIP to a folder where the current user has write access and run SCSKiller.exe.
4Current releases may trigger Windows SmartScreen because they are not yet code-signed. The project recommends checking the SHA-256 value published in the release notes when verifying a download.
5On the first run, scan the library, build a compile plan, and write pipelines into the driver shader cache before you launch the game.

SCSKiller Cache Paths

SCSKiller writes prepared pipelines into the GPU driver's shader cache. These are the cache locations used for NVIDIA DXCache, NVIDIA GLCache, and AMD DxCache.

%LOCALAPPDATA%\NVIDIA\DXCacheNVIDIA DirectX shader cache folder
%LOCALAPPDATA%\NVIDIA\GLCacheNVIDIA OpenGL shader cache folder
AMD\DxCacheAMD driver DxCache folder. Do not delete it while the driver is running.

SCSKiller System Requirements

SCSKiller currently targets 64-bit Windows PCs using supported NVIDIA or AMD graphics hardware. Graphics API support differs slightly between the two GPU vendors, while Intel GPUs are not currently supported.

WindowsWindows 10 version 2004 or newer, or Windows 11, on a 64-bit system.
NVIDIANVIDIA GPUs are supported for DirectX 12 games and DirectX 11 games.
AMDAMD GPUs are supported for DirectX 12 games.
IntelIntel GPUs are not currently supported according to the official project documentation.

SCSKiller Supported Game Stores

SCSKiller can automatically find installed games from a range of major PC launchers and storefronts. Store detection lets the library group games by their source and launch supported titles through their normal store.

SteamSCSKiller can detect installed Steam games and launch supported games through Steam.
EpicInstalled games from the Epic Games launcher are supported by SCSKiller's game discovery system.
EASCSKiller can discover games installed through the EA app.
GOGGames installed through GOG are included in SCSKiller's supported game-store scanning.
UbisoftSCSKiller supports discovery of installed Ubisoft Connect games.
XboxSCSKiller supports installed games from the Xbox app on PC.
Battle.netBattle.net is included among the launchers SCSKiller can scan for installed games.
MoreThe current official documentation also lists PURPLE, HoYoPlay, and Gaijin among supported game sources.

SCSKiller Recorder Guide

SCSKiller includes an optional recorder for games whose required pipelines cannot be fully determined from game files alone. The recorder can collect pipeline activity and frame-time information from a play session, after which SCSKiller can use the recording for compilation.

1Enable the optional recorder for a supported game when SCSKiller cannot determine all required pipelines directly from the game's files.
2Play the game for a representative session so the recorder can capture pipeline activity that occurs during gameplay.
3Return to the game's SCSKiller page, where recorded frame times can distinguish shader compilation stutters from other types of hitches.
4Use the collected recording to expand the game's compilation plan and compile the discovered pipelines before the next play session.

SCSKiller Anti-Cheat Safety

SCSKiller applies special restrictions to games containing anti-cheat systems. Its normal policy is to read those games' files without launching, injecting into, or enabling the recorder for them.

ScanSCSKiller may read files belonging to an anti-cheat game in order to analyze it.
RecorderThe standard recorder is not offered for games that SCSKiller identifies as using anti-cheat.
InjectionThe project states that it does not inject the recorder into anti-cheat games during normal operation.
OfflineThe official documentation describes an explicit opt-in offline exception for ELDEN RING and ARMORED CORE VI without EasyAntiCheat, requiring confirmation each time.
